USMT: User State Migration Steps

  1. Get pc name of old and new pc
  2. Go to User State Migration and click "Create Computer Association" in the top left corner
    1. Put in Source Computer (PC name of old computer)
    2. Put in Destination Computer (PC name of the new computer)
  3. Go to Device Collections < Application - Click on Workstations and scroll to bottom
    1. Right click on USMT State Capture and Select "Add Resources"
    2. Type in PC Name of OLD PC and click "Browse"
    3. After confirming the PC Name matches, click on pc and click "Add"
    4. Click "OK"
  4. Right click on OLD PC Name listed inside of USMT State Capture and navigate to client notification.
    1. Select "Download Computer Policy"
    2. Repeat step 4 to and select "Evaluate Application Deployments"
  5. Wait for backup to complete (can take over an hour). Best way to determine if it is completed is to navigate to:
    1. \\nwb-sccm-01\usmt$
    2. When the file stops getting larger, it is completed
  6. Go to Device Collections < Application - Click on Workstations and scroll to bottom
    1. Right click on USMT State Restore and Select "Add Resources"
    2. Type in PC Name of NEW PC and click "Browse"
    3. After confirming the PC Name matches, click on pc and click "Add"
    4. Click "OK"
  7. Right click on NEW PC Name listed inside of USMT State Restore and navigate to client notification.
    1. Select "Download Computer Policy"
    2. Repeat step 4 to and select "Evaluate Application Deployments"
  8. Sign into new pc
    1. Go to software center and look for "Restore User State"
      1. If you can't find it, repeat Step 7
    2. Install and wait for it complete (connect to ethernet if possible)
  9. When Install stops, user profile is successfully migrated
